My most recent work, “Ten Billion Days and One Hundred Billion Nights,” was on view in the Mission in Tanegashima, the space art festival in Japan, from Aug 10th to Sep 15th, 2014.
The work is a site-specific installation which incorporates a vine-covered abandoned house in Tanegashima.
The piece is to be viewed from the outside through the windows of the abandoned house.

After cleaning out the debris from the house, I recomposed the space, bringing in white sand from Tanegashima beaches and installing fiber optic lighting and a pair of deer antlers. Fiber optic lighting was hung from the ceiling and layered over the floor evoking images of the galaxy and the ocean. The mageshika deer antlers were placed in the corner of the room where the fiber optic light from the ground and ceiling meet. The fiber optic lights hanging from the ceiling are constantly moved by the passing wind, lending the work an organic and changing appearance. In the silence one can hear the chirping of crickets and rainwater dripping off the vines that cover the house.
In bringing these elements together I desire to illuminate the life which had already taken root in this abandoned house and to merge nature and artifact as an expression of this life.
Through this piece, I also seek to communicate the story of the mageshika deer to a contemporary audience.
This work is titled after a science fiction novel by Ryu Mitsuse.
*Driven by starvation, the mageshika deer crossed the sea from Maneshima, a deserted island, roughly 30 kilometers to Tanegashima. Remains of the deer were found within the digestive tracts of sharks. Although an endangered species, the mageshika deer is the only subspecies of yazo shika deer not protected by law since Mageshima is privately owned and is closed off to visitors.
種子島宇宙芸術祭のプレイベント “ミッション in Tanegashima”での展示作品『百億の昼と千億の夜』(2014年8月10日〜9月15日）
種子島で発見した、かずらに覆われた廃屋を利用したサイトスペシフィックのインスタレーション

廃屋の廃棄物を撤去し、廃屋内の空間を再構成。種子島の白浜の砂を廃屋内部と周辺に、光ファイバーを室内の上部と床面に、銀河と海をイメージした床面の光ファイバーの先には馬毛鹿の角を一対設置。
ゆっくりと明滅する光ファイバーは、風の動きとともに揺れ、久しくとどまることはない。鈴虫の鳴き声と、かずらに溜まった雨水が滴り落ちる音が、静寂の中に響く。
かずらが覆ったことで新たな生命を宿していた廃屋に、光により新たな生命を灯した。廃屋とかずら、砂、鹿の角、そして光という、自然と人工物の融合による表現を目指した。
種子島の星空はとても美しく、浜辺に行くと、夜空（宇宙）と海が時空を超えた連続した連なりであり、私もまたその連なりと流転の中の一部であることを体感できる。
家とは、家族と暮らし、人生を歩み、人が包まれている空間であり、源である。宇宙とは、生命を優しく包み込む「生命の家」のような存在であると同時に、生命の源でもある。宇宙—生命、死—再生、ミクロ—マクロの連環、空に姿を現さない昼の星のような存在を、浮かび上がらせる。
種子島の馬毛鹿の物語を織り交ぜた。
タイトルは、光瀬龍のSFを元にしている。
*マゲシカは、種子島から30km離れた馬毛島（日本で2番目に大きい無人島）から海を泳いで種子島に渡ってくる。サメの胃袋から鹿の足が出てくることもあるという。絶滅危惧種でありながら、島全体を私企業が所有しているため、調査が出来ないこともあり、唯一全く保護策が講じられていないニホンジカの亜種である。
