Super Animator: Yutaka Nakamura (中村豊)

Nakamura began to stand out as a Mechanical Animator and Mechanical Animation Director in Tekkaman Blade, taking some influence from Masami Oobari, later he joined Sunrise where he actively participated. He made a breakthrough in Character Action Animation because he used to watch live action movies to learn how movement should be represented, taking influence from Hong Kong movies and the exaggerated reactions when someone gets hit.

Between Escaflowne (Movie) and Cowboy Bebop The Movie, he joined Bones with an exclusive contract, participating mainly in studio projects, but sometimes leaving to participate in outside projects in secret using a pseudonym. Since his participation in Cowboy Bebop, he was given some creative freedom, working on the storyboard of his own sequences, which he kept when he joined Bones.

His involvement with Rahxephon allowed him to develop his mechanical style into something very similar to his Character Action Animation, also implementing many aspects of cinematography and slowly began to move out of his conservative style, being the basis for his next style; Animation focused on the movement of the characters, addition of many interesting planes to change the perception of the action scenes and many effects.

His style changed drastically during Concrete Revolutio (2015), as movement took a backseat and he began to focus more on spectacular effects. He gained the fame of being the “Grandmaster Battle Animator” due to his high abilities in action animation.

He implements many Impact Frames, in which he adds different interesting details such as the skeleton of the characters, outlines, etc. all usually done from dirty pencil strokes.
He has very high capabilities when it comes to handling depth in Background Animation, giving surprisingly dynamic scenes that show a great understanding of what is moving.

When there is accelerated movement in the foreground, he often uses smears consisting of thick, dirty lines, followed by literally returning to the drawing as a blur without outline, and then returning to thick, dirty lines, finally recovering the shape.

Regarding the cinematography, he usually uses a set of planes constantly to give more dynamism to the change of cut, the planes he uses are represented in quite interesting and even complicated perspectives, all following an impressive dynamism that makes his scenes very characteristic.

What is Sakuga?
Sakuga (作画) literally means drawing.
It is not something specific like “super spectacular animation”, but the term is used to define a well animated sequence and that’s it, good animation.
Animation is fundamentally movement, so a sequence with good movement is already good animation, the effects and uses of cinematography are only added to the base.
