Adam Savage in Awe of This Ninja Turtles Krang Cosplay!
hey everybody Adam Savage in my cave and I have guests today in the form of Cosplay Legends Mikey and Shelly Carver and you might not believe me but I have not yet looked at the costume Shelly is wearing here I just love reacting for real on camera I’m about to see it for the first time whoa sh waa that is so messed up you guys this is so beautiful this is okay so forgive wow he’s bulging and moving in there sure is I see foam and also silicone and okay who who who who who is this this is uh crang from uh Teenage mut nja Turtles okay we have a hint that’s the pop oh my God the Popsicles the Ninja Turtles popsicles so he’s a brain he’s a uh interdimensional uh Alien who who uh uh who has a android robot mech suit that he walks around itre so this is him wearing this suit dude oh my God your head is so beautiful thank you I I see it’s oh there’s so am I right there’s a lot of processes going on in this absolutely yeah we wanted to see how how many mixed mediums that we could put into one one project I’m just going to start right off the bat by saying your guys paint is just so chef’s kiss thank you wow thank you so much dudes it’s just like there’s subtlety you’ve got the the the redder around the edges makes me really understand that this is skin stretched over mechanics that’s the idea that’s so messed up um let’s start at the beautiful head with your curl it reminds me a little bit of Robin Williams character from Baron muchen oh yeah had his hair up in a thing like that um especially because your head looks like it could be it could be a mountain in scale oh okay right like it’s so monolithic it like it could be at any scale but tell me about the let’s start at the head and move down through the processes yeah so um we first saw the this is a this is a statue we found the reference from a statue a little little action figure and so we didn’t make this design um the Design’s from a good smile company um and they went for more of a Japanese Samurai yeah you can tell by like the little mechanical top knot which I really really look look at this oh my God you guys are incredible I can’t this covers your whole body and yet you can move and it doesn’t look like it’s biting you plus I’m getting some big Rusty and the Big Boy robot vibes from these shoes yeah so I am standing on wooden blocks oh Fair um and then shoes are built onto the wooden blocks and then now that I’m older and I’m cosplay you got to get those Comfort insult you know you super have to have the Orthotics yeah yeah yeah so you got you got to think long long term if you’re going to be in a costume for like more than 5 hours so that’s just one of the ways that we take care of ourselves while doing this I am really curious about the yeah go ahead yeah bring oh yeah hi hi may I may I please oh my gosh so I was wondering this feels like it’s almost latex but it’s a urethane it is a neoprene rubber what you castable neoprene yeah um there’s a company called Creature cast Creature cast and so they they do a knee and um we we’ve been kind of like trying to stay away from latex just because we didn’t know how to paint it properly yet okay and so the neoprene you can just go straight to the acrylics without having to learn about all the harsh chemicals the mixing ratios we could just have that artistic Freedom aiz nap and then choke to death fair but you know the funny thing is we did we have been doing silicone it’s almost the same process as as latex this this silicone creature is so and the there’s just some really sophisticated stuff going on here I want to point out like the textural difference is is actually really important to The Narrative of the costume we originally did the head in silicone yeah um but we thought that it would look too different from from the action figure oh my goodness that blank is so pretty and of course the weight yeah oh weight yeah I I did try putting it on but it was just so heavy and I there was just absolutely no space to breathe oh man so you know we had a pivot and into something that is wearable so that’s why we decided with going this way you know what’s really funny about this head is I was trying to remember what it reminded me of but there is a way in which these so we shot another video today and the first video we shot was with Shelly in a Frank Miller Dark Knight costume and this reminds me of the dude that Batman fights the mut the mutant leader yes the mutant leader balls nasty that’s what I hear this D saying when she wears this I was like oh it just needs the little uh the little uh what was it uh like drill nipples yes yes yes I was like it’ be perfect yeah so I’m looking at the textural differences I really like like I said it was clear to me that this is skin stretched over mechanics did you did did the Statue give you hints like if you put red around the edges it’ll help sell that someone did repaint it and so they did it harsher so I was like okay let me do that and try to do just a little bit more subtle so I hope I I made it more subtle no you really did especially cuz like around here it’s really this is this is a great mix of textures down here and again when you get to this yellow the worn Parts here yeah are so good and they set off the Silicon so well this feels fleshy and super messed up yeah I know like Adam we can we can hold hands can we hold hands yeah right there right where with oh oh my God that is awful that is seriously awful however I want to wear these shoes just around yeah yeah they do give you an extra boost of confidence when you are so tall how do you like being 6’2 it’s a Dream It’s a dream come true it’s a dream come true I like looking over everybody it’s like really fun because you know we always are these like kind of creature characters I am tall um and it’s just just a fun fun to pretend you know fun to have that little a little bit for a while do you have after you’ve trooped for the day yes and you’ve peeled yourself out of your candy shell and youve rung out your clothes yep yep yep y do you have a Poston uh self-care routine that’s a great question um honestly it’s like we sit in our car with the AC full blast in the parking garage of the con and you know we do prepare in of like we do have um snacks Beverages and we’re just away from like other people and it’s just us and we’re just like and you’re just going back and forth like that part was really cool yeah that part was really cool we’re just like really dead um and then so we like recharged by being by ourselves and then we’re like okay get the deodorant let’s go and my change of shirt deodorant and then let’s go back hear that cosplayers deodorant deodorant I’m just thinking about the elevators at Dragon Kong oh oh yeah I can imagine I can imagine um the the the pauldrons here the shoulders look like they’re a different technique um it it’s just Eva Pham it’s just it is um it is a quicky seal um stippled onto it oh so like um what is that like a like a sealant yeah to get to get that dimensional sort of cast iron look guys it’s spectacular and I the Fidelity to the crappy original Ninja Turtle popsicle I’m so glad you said crappy cuz oh no it’s one of my favorite things is the picture versus the reality of the popsicle then this is the worst one of all of them yeah it’s so cute it’s so cute dude I I just can’t get the plate bolted into the skin of your calves yeah yeah yeah yeah what I really like is like the arms because we for the upper part of the arm we did use the upholstery foam and then like the hand part is the Eva EV so I do have this like flexibility but I wouldn’t actually be able to flex my hand or My Fingers um but I do have since it is since this arm is longer than my natural arm I do have Ledges built inside so that I’m not so tired of holding them all the time Fair um so those are just ways that we’re like taking our taking care of ourselves in the costume I’m curious about I mean obviously you have support but does it make you at all claustrophobic not to be able to use your hands it’s really tough and then I do have to you know be like uh call in on someone um but it’s not it’s not too bad you know we check in with each other all the time um on how I’m doing if I need water if we both need a break pretty much so and you’re safe we just get me the hell out of here oh we run through cons we just take her head off and we’re like nope sorry no pictures so I have a picture this the Iron Man there yeah uh one of the knees just started wearing its way through my own knee after an hour on the floor and then it broke skin so I’m feeling it and my son was my body Ma and I was like handsome I need you to find me a way off this floor fast and he came and found a hand truck and wheeled me off the floor perfect that’s great was really really fun that that help is completely clutch for a this B yes yes yes yes for sure and it’s really good and you know the cosay community has changed and evolved so much where you know we do honor each other’s space we do honor each other if we do need a breaks like oh I just took my head I need a break and come back in like 15 minutes and we cross paths again so it’s it’s a very communicative understanding Community most of the time the the the Deep traction of Cosplay is not consent and asking permission to let people get you into your pose so you are ready to make them look great is really beautiful let’s let’s give you the best picture possible yeah exactly this is such a masterpiece can you spin one more time yes I sure can oh man the spot the handle yeah might oh my God this little butt gear is the cutest thing you guys I also really appreciate the ways in which the the efficiency so I think the goal here is that this looks like it tucks into the calf but for ease of movement and assembly we did have it velcroed in but the first con she ripped all the velcro out so we’re just like it’s fine not on purpose no but I mean I can totally like these are some of the mechanical engineering compromises you have to make for comfort and bring ability um and again it’s not like my eye noticed it I just was looking and I was like oh I see a problem that was solved this way kind of moment guys that the pauldron does a lot of work hiding scenes for you doesn’t it yeah um do you want to try uh the phot yank it out there you go so it’s really great to like take photos oh that’s great they can hold it and then they just pop it right back into your action finger hand exactly exactly we thought of it all this is so great you could 3D print these and give them out someone I think someone does that yeah yeah is is like really soft oh it is really soft yeah is this just painted open cell foam uh aery foam yeah yeah yeah yeah I love aul yeah yeah and it it just those wonders and then this little thing brings so much joy Shelly again every time you guys have cele to show me I am so inspired it makes me want to build
