Sadot the Gamer is back with an in-depth discussion about the current state of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 DLC and the impact of the recent cyber attack that changed everything at Insomniac Games. Despite not announcing any DLC plans ahead of launch, everything took a turn when the cyber attack spoiled Spider-Man 2’s DLC surprise along with a decade of Insomniac’s upcoming projects. This included the cancellation of a multiplayer Spider-Man game, so that Insomniac could focus on their core single-player games while Sony prioritized other live-service endeavors like Concord.
Since the leak, Insomniac has faced mounting pressure from fans about the Spider-Man 2 DLC, leading to increasingly toxic behavior online, even though the studio was busy dealing with securing their network and ensuring their employees’ safety, whose data was leaked. All this while still working on promised updates like the delayed new game plus, as well as Marvel’s Wolverine, which also suffered delays because of the hack.
Speculation that there may be no DLC anymore was quickly dismissed after the new game plus update accidentally exposed developer tools, allowing some players to preview a planned DLC based on the villain Beetle. Insomniac’s non-committal responses about the story expansion, rather than outright denial, confirmed to many that the DLC was still in development. And it makes sense: why would Sony, a company known for its focus on profit (just look at the PS5 Pro price tag), not release DLC for a game that sold 11 million copies in under a year?
The real question is when the announcement will be made. Some expected a reveal at the September State of Play, but instead, Sucker Punch stole the spotlight with the reveal of Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. This led some fans to think the DLC had been canceled. However, history suggests otherwise—Insomniac skipped the February State of Play to let Final Fantasy VII Rebirth shine, despite having updates ready, so skipping a showcase isn’t new for them.
The ideal time for the Spider-Man 2 DLC reveal is right around the corner. Insomniac is releasing a free PS5 Pro update on November 7th, coinciding with the PS5 Pro launch. Additionally, the one-year anniversary of Spider-Man 2 is approaching on October 20th, just after New York Comic Con. It would be the perfect time to announce the DLC and have it ready for the PS5 Pro launch.
The idea that a year after launch is too late for DLC is pretty absurd—especially considering God of War: Ragnarok announced a DLC a month after its one-year anniversary. As of October 1st, Insomniac hasn’t confirmed or denied anything, meaning patience is still key.
Looking beyond the DLC, there is much to be excited about. Insomniac has Marvel’s Wolverine, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, and an unannounced superhero game in development. Click the video on screen to learn more.
