Tekkonkinkreet (鉄コン筋クリート) is a three-volume manga series by Taiyō Matsumoto (松本大洋). It was originally published from 1993 to 1994 in the Big Comic Spirits magazine, Japan. The story revolves around a pair of street kids, Kuro (Black) & Shiro (White) and the Yakuza who are trying to take over the city by building an amusement park in the fictional Treasure Town.
An award winning feature-length anime directed by American-born filmmaker Michael Arias was released in 2006. What stood out to me the most about the film is how impressive the set design is. You should check out the anime, even if you have no interest in the story, just to experience the beauty of Treasure Town.
I couldn’t find the exact year Jun Planning released the Tekkonkinkreet figurines but if I remember correctly I got those online between 2002 and 2003.
Suehiro Maruo (丸尾 末広), born in 1956, is a legendary Japanese manga artist based in Tokyo. One of the most prominent artists of the “Ero Guro” genre in Japanese art, his works often depict gruesome stories in the early years of Showa Era Japan.
Mr Arashi’s Amazing Freak Show (Shōjo Tsubaki, 少女椿), published by Blast Books (USA) in 1993, is his first work to be translated to English. The book is now out of print but used copies can still be found on Amazon.
Ping-Pong Club (行け!稲中卓球部) is a 13 volume comedy manga series by Minoru Furuya (古谷 実). It was published between 1993 and 1996 in Japanese Weekly Young Magazine. An anime television series based on the manga was made in 1995 and released in the USA by Central Park Media.
Full of crude Japanese humour, the story centers on the daily lives of the five members of a middle school Ping-Pong Club. If you are interested, I wonder what you can find if you search for “Ping-Pong Club” on YouTube. 😉
The set of figurines in the video was made by Bandai in 2006.
