【New PANTY & STOCKING with GARTERBELT】#01 メイキング

On July 9 2025, the first episode of
“New PANTY & STOCKING with GARTERBELT”has aired.
On this video we will be giving you an exclusive look inside the studio’s creative process during the production of episode one. So the production of the first episode has started!
Please share your thoughts! I’m gonna put in everything I’ve got…and slack off smartly. Slacking off means entrusting responsibility to our younger talents So the challenge is how to delegate effectively Technically, the development of this project has finished back then, the designs and the universe I want this project to be a place where the young generation can have fun, and I want to see how they are going to make a fun film with this title. I’m very excited on how they are going to design the screen, and I wish our young talents will have fun So this episode is the continuation from the last episode of
“Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt” So we are kicking off the first episode with the same energy and tension of the previous last episode So that high tension has been achieved last time by making this fun anime in a year and a half So this first episode starts off with this super high tension that’s from the last episode But now we are 15 years older…so it may not be easy to return to that mindset I once had when I was younger -It’s our first time to make a sequel of an Imaishi title
-Yeah, we’ve never made a sequel this direct
-Yeah, we’ve never have We didn’t know it was this challenging, resisting the urge to change things Yup, being loyal and respecting the original source material Well, the original source is US!!! Doing our best while being bounded by the settings we came up with 14 years ago. Well we did want to make a sequel for a long time, but there were a few problems that couldn’t be solved But thankfully a good flow kicked in, and here we are now Well in between I’ve drawn manga and had a series at
“Anime Style”, so I’ve been checking it out now and then, so it wasn’t like opening a dusty box We ended up having a serious conversation, didn’t we? I’m pretty excited! All right, the production is going to start!! The Drawing and Animating Process Here lies the heart of animation!
Countless animators bring each work to life through hand-drawn art. Let’s take a peek at some of these amazing creators Working on the layout When working on “Panty and Stocking” all I think about is…how challenging it is Imaishi’s storyboards’ drawings are pretty rough,
giving the animators creative freedom to interpret So he entrusts us with this freedom, but the important points are clearly nailed down. So just making this try to work in the first place is already a challenge. For example, look at this camera work So if you look at the storyboard, as you can see the camera angle on the first frame is different from the third frame. So there is a lot of options on animating this, as I work I keep thinking about how to bring out the full potential of each cut so the audience can really enjoy it. Because there isn’t just one correct approach, honestly I struggle everytime So for this cut, it differs from the storyboard, but… The part I most want to emphasize on this cut is when Brief opens up a crater and blasts off. I don’t want to move the camera so… Because I want only this simple movement to leave a strong impression And let’s see how it goes!
It’s different from the storyboard, so I have no idea if this will even get approved. It’s up to the director and the episode director As I said before, an exact answer does not exist,
so I think and struggle each and every cut,
so yeah…takes a lot of time Well I think it’s nice that the viewers are able to see all the effort you guys are putting in And I see you use a mechanical pencil to animate Yes, and I can’t draw if it isn’t this brand called
“Doctor Grip” I’ve been using these since middle school But…you’re not gripping the “Doctor Grip” part! Yeah, I hold the upper part
I just like the balance and weight So I do not use the grip part at all Working on the layout
SUSHiO also worked as a main animator on the previous
“Panty and Stocking” -Does drawing “Panty and Stocking” again after all these years make you emotional?
-Not at all Not emotional, more like excited
I wanted to start drawing as fast as I can Back then it was pretty hard for me to draw in a cartoon-like style -So back then you struggled?
-Yeah But I was good at drawing stylized,
so I struggled but I didn’t Tsutsumi checking on SUSHiO -Are you working SUSHiO?
-Apparently! -Everyday?
-this is my 6th cut -So you’re almost finished?
-Not yet
-Well you’re close, aren’t you? From your perspective,is there anything you’d highlight about this cut? I don’t do anything special while working on a Imaishi project, because if you draw exactly how the storyboard directs you to, it becomes cool I used to sneak in a bunch of little special things in the past, but those days are over -and drawing digitally is fun because you can control the surface area with color
-what do you mean? There are ways to judge other than lines For example, this hair Maybe I want to draw and try out this shape you can animate it by recognizing the color and if you like it, you just draw the outline of the shape So animating effects became easier Since SUSHiO had such a strong image as an analog animator until recently,it’s kind of moving to see you drawing digitally and clicking buttons Click, click, click, click…. Got some serious finger techniques, huh? Doing Episode Director checks -So you were measuring the timing with your stopwatch?
-Yeah, counting how many footsteps I can include -Your stopwatch is an app?
-Yup
-What happened to the real ones? I don’t think there a lot of people left who use the actual stopwatch…I wonder if *Otsuka uses it?
<*Masahiko Otsuka : President of TRIGGER, he was the co-director of the previous “Panty and Stocking”> Wow, I guess that shows just how widespread digital has become So, you are not only the episode director of episode 1 but also the co-director of this series Yeah, Imaishi has a lot in his hands, so I guess I’m the bridging role with the rest of the team. A lot of the processing gets decided in episode 1, so then I’ll pass that feedback on to the other episodes. I’m not the one who actually animates and draw,
so most of what I do is thinking, planning and making decisions, things that doesn’t show up directly on screen. Well I’m happy that we’re able to share that to the viewers! That there is a lot of people working hard, whose works doesn’t directly show up on the film. Yeah, nothing flashy Working on the Director Checks So on this cut, Brief is carrying *censored* with his *censored* … and he’s trying to stand up This cut is the layout that Arai was working on! At the storyboard there were a few points that I couldn’t manage to put directions throughly, so I’m supervising it now I want to express the way it stirs and rises, and gradually rising up. But I can’t express it in words So I guess you’re going to express it by…drawing! -The director supervising how the way it stirs and rises
-Yeah, it’s important If you look at it closely, it really looks like a *censored* -What are you talking about?
-Why are you acting clueless!? Sorry I left you just hanging there Ditched you and left you high and dry what an evil grown-up
Working on the Animation Director Checks SUSHiO is not only handling layouts, but also served as the animation director for the second half of the episode What are you thinking when you are working as the animation director? I don’t draw based on logic, so honestly, I don’t know how to explain it. It’s like I’m drawing on instinct. I look at the storyboard and think, “This scene should feel like this, so not like that,”but I can’t really put it into words. I’m just drawing what I see in my head as the final image. I don’t think at all when I draw—it’s just instinct, no logic involved. -Wow, you’ve entered that kind of level
-Yeah, let’s just put it that way Actually, I’m trying to find that place right now, because honestly right this moment I am lost From yesterday, I haven’t really hit my stride with work Do you usually get back into the groove while you’re drawing? Usually yeah…but now not at all! Even so, you keep on drawing, which makes you a professional Well I don’t want to draw at all, but I have to! -Sorry, I deliberately wanted to ruin your video
-So horrible lol This is what the original motion looked like in this cut when it first came to me It felt like it was missing contrast, and the shot stayed on a single horizontal plane, so I figured I might try inserting something to break it up. All right that’s enough, get out of here! -Sorry I came when you were concentrating
-Nah it’s ok This is the final version of the animation director correction, Based on these corrections, the animator will proceed with the genga (2nd key animation) Working on the genga process Which cut is this? This is where Panty’s cubes assemble and gradually take form -lightning strikes
-the effects are so cool At the previous “Panty and Stocking”, there were a lot of cuts that include lightning So I got a lot of reference and inspiration Their puzzled faces are so cute Yeah, on the designs they have a sharp-looking face on the storyboard it was just a minimal face with a circle and a dot So I assumed their expressions would look like this and on this title, the outlines of the characters are pretty distinctive Looks like a sticker, which makes it fun Working on the genga process This cut is Brief’s fantasy, thinking of Panty -Actually this scene was not in the storyboard
-Wait, it wasn’t? On the storyboard, Brief is remembering Panty’s memories from the previous title, and then he screams while fantasizing Panty and I was told that I can add some scenes, so I wanted to add a scene of their first night, since Brief is screaming so strongly and I so drew it and submitted it, and the corrections of the director came back So this is what I drew, first night scene, Panty welcoming Brief nicely, and then Imaishi sent me this “A sadistic fantasy woman tailored perfectly to B’s desires.” from Imaishi and I was like, This is it! So now I am working on this based on the perfect correction What details did you most focus on in this cut? Well of course, my goal is to draw Brief’s fantasized Panty as cute as possible This cut is so fun to work on -So I guess, be sure to check out a side of Panty you don’t usually get to see, onlyin the anime!
-Yeah, please enjoy! The Live-Action Filming Process This live-action cut, where Corset transforms into bubbles, was filmed in the studio’s meeting room!
A large team of staff came together to make it happen, here’s the behind-the-scenes look of the entire shoot! Hey, don’t look! lol My favorite character is Mako! Miki sculpted the mini-Corset who got ran over See-Through, the car
Koyama doing the final inspection So soft and squishy, the hardness is perfect Suddenly Koyama started to mix paint Right before the shoot, they decided to refine the colors even more! So on the spot, they mixed paints, created new shades of color, and started painting by hand. Looks like mustard, looks tasty Actually, it does While the colors are being adjusted, a rehearsal is conducted using a test model, preparing for the shoot. This is the lighting setup in progress, to achieve the look for this cut, they’re physically shifting boards with cut out patterned boards by hand. -Looks okay
-Thank you very much Corset’s color adjustments and the camera rehearsal is complete, it’s time to get ready for the main shoot. (Blood of mini-Corset) We’re using a slime-like substance to set up the blood of Corset a blue nose-bleed? Corset’s setup is complete Bubbles are placed on top of Corset,
and on to the main shoot! The bubbles are blown away with a blower, and in the final version, the footage is played in reverse to create the effect of bubbles forming. We got an OK! Next is a take with only using bubbles Once Corset is removed, we use tape on the screen to create position markers so we can remember its exact placement. and the bubbles are placed based on the position markings Time for the main shoot To shoot a different version, they have drilled a hole on the board to let the bubbles flow through. and the bag exploded! Emergency! The bag filled with bubbles have exploded! The bubbles were harder than expected, so they are resetting and readjusting the firmness and viscosity of the bubbles Wow, doing live-action shoots are very tough! The adjustments of the bubbles are complet, on to the main shoot! And we got an OK! Imaishi is satisfied. Good work everyone! Watching it from afar, it looks like an incredibly difficult and delicate task. It is, one mistake and everything might shut down On making bubbles, controlling the size is very hard. Bubble and particle sizes, as well as the size of the membrane, influence how transparent it looks—the larger the membrane, the more transparent it tends to be. Viscosity and bubble hardness are also important factors. -And you just put it together on the spot?
-Yup! I was like…all right! That should be fine!
and then disaster came…oops (the bag exploded) -As expected, live-action work is really challenging, isn’t it?
-Yeah it really is! But thanks to everybody we got a fascinating shot The director, Imaishi was also very pleased, and I am glad After going through many processes and combining the efforts of numerous staff members, the first episode was successfully completed. So, how was it? Since the project began with many unresolved elements, -Because it’s the first episode, it was still in the stage where everyone was figuring things out, I guess?
-Yeah It was a bit of trial and progress at the same time, so it was challenging in many places, but I’m glad everything concluded smoothly. Togo was the production line manager of
“Delicious in Dungeon” as well For me, it was the first time to work with Mr. Imaishi as a production line manager Bringing Imaishi’s ideas to life was very challenging, I wan’t able to deliver them smoothly. I’m still quite inexperienced in many ways, but I want to learn more and put in more effort while finding numerous ways to improve! You take your work very seriously, wow! We’re pushing the limits in many ways, so stay tuned! (Also served as the background director on the previous
“Panty and Stocking”)
I’ve been asked about this title at industry meetings for over a decade now, because the designs and artwork were so new compared to normal backgrounds 14, 15 years ago A lot of Background Directors around the industry asked me,
“How did you draw that?” -And you will be working on it again in this new age, right?
-I’ll do my best (Also served as the Color Designer on the previous
“Panty and Stocking”)
May I have a comment? Well, 14 years ago when we were working on the final episode I asked them “The series really finished!?”
and I was told, “Yeah!”
and here we are, I never expected this project to return But between these 14 years I’ve worked together with the Imaishi team So I wish I’m able to show that I’ve improved,
and because of that I am putting pressure on myself Looking back, I can’t we managed to create this! So I have to push myself to not lose to my past self I’m glad the production of the first episode concluded smoothly Actually, almost none of the colors from the last title were reused. That was our big challenge We’ll use the same designs, but we wanted to renew all the colors So the volume of the work for the first episodes was a lot, because we had to renew each and every color design Me and Wakabayashi and Kakita was constantly working on that,
so the amount of work was so much it was basically the climax But our experience from “PROMARE” and “STAR WARS: VISIONS – THE TWINS” really came in handy, because we knew which color shines the best under these circumstances So I think it’s become the most up-to-date version of an Imaishi title I thought the blood and the organs of big Panty and Stocking were really pretty Well SUSHiO told me that he wanted them colored in various colors, like a rainbow which was a very challenging demand, how to make it look pretty There’s the color of the blood, color of the characters, color of the background, everything is so vivid! So yeah, I guess it was pretty challenging… But well…this anime isn’t really something to watch seriously Casually? Yeah! We did work hard to make the film, but it’s a cartoon! Please enjoy it casually, with some snacks in hand! While working on the first episode, what was your biggest challenge? Panty’s massive *censored* filling up the entire screen -There aren’t many anime like that out there, I think.
-Obviously! My goal of this new series is… -Whole families gathering together, and watching this anime together at their living rooms
-Whaat? and you know, *censored* ing everyone’s *censored* within their hearts, with our strong *censored* What the heck are you talking about!? All right, the production of the first episode has ended smoothly! Such a great Video-Edit! (Video editing section, the final step of the production of anime) Thanks to everyone’s hard work and dedication,
we ended up with a high quality result Compared to now, things felt way more chaotic 14 years ago. What was your biggest challenge working on the first episode? Personally, the opening sequence flow from the recap section holds a special place in my heart The “Five minutes!” part, I personally like that part,
that was a thing that I wanted to do May I have a message to the fans and viewers? The story has just begun, as well as the production, and as for the production I think we got off a good start. I hope the audience will enjoy and have fun watching the upcoming episodes. But I do not recommend watching it in the morning -the tension is too high?
-Your stomach will be full
-so maybe everyone should watch it at midnight? Just joking, please watch it anytime you want, and have fun! TRIGGER Jan Ken Pon (Rock, Paper, Scissors)
