Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly says while boosters are needed to provide sufficient protection against Omicron, primary vaccine doses are still the priority.

“A real callout to anyone in Australia who is currently eligible for their primary doses – those first two doses – this is still the most important component of protection,” Professor Kelly said during a media conference on Friday.

He said there has recently been a rise in intensive care patients in New South Wales, with almost all of these unvaccinated.

“So that still remains the number one priority for the vaccination program.”
