The Sky Crawlers is a Japanese anime set in an alternative history timeline where the world is at peace but in order to ease the tension of a populace accustomed to war and aggression, private corporations contract fighter pilots to engage in actual combat operations against each other. The film introduces a mystery involving characters called Kildren humanoids genetically engineered in a way that enables to live eternally in adolescence.
The story is a bit silly in my view but it doesn have some rather nice fictional aircraft types influenced by real-life aircraft such as the Northrop XB-35.
The movie also uses CGI for effects such as the polished metal aircraft skins.
There are some pretty good air combat scenes. Here’s a major aerial battle.
