We get an explanation for how one of the characters looks throughout this movie and throughout the movie set years later. Early in the plot, Randall gets rid of his glasses, which causes him to squint, explaining why he does so in Monsters Inc. This tells us that his glaring isn’t actually meant as a scary expression, but due to his poor eyesight. This might also explain why Randall mistakes Mike for Boo when he kidnaps him and takes him to the Scream Extractor during the first movie.
