Violet Evergarden is a story covering many bases: from what love truly is, to how any life can change another, and for today, what it even means to be human to begin with. As a former child combatant, Violet was treated like a tool, something to be ordered around and traded, as how she’s given to Major Gilbert Bougainvillea. He’s the first person to actually care for her, but she’s unable to understand his emotion and the words “I love you,” as she’s never known them before. Without ever exercising her free will, without ever finding love, she seems to be nothing. That is, until she becomes an Auto Memories Doll, a writer of letters for those who can’t on their own. Through this she hears many forms of the words “I love you,” and comes to see there is no one definition, but rather an idea that we must learn for ourselves. Violet finds that to love is not to be human, but that love so often embodies the same qualities which make us human. An overall great anime to watch, it introduced me to what I was feeling in a new way. Caught between author and viewer, I wonder if I too, could find humanity through great stories. This is my quest like Violet Evergardens: to learn how to be human.
