江戸の町。火消し当番で、町内を見回りしている母とユズヒコ。一方、父とみかんは長屋の自宅で留守番をしている。すると、カマドの上に置いてある土鍋から煙が上がっている。それを見た父はみかんに「水汲んでこい！」と指示をする。慌てて外の井戸に向かうみかん。「お母さん、何で消さずに行っちゃうの～っ」と井戸から水を汲みながら、みかんが文句を言っていると、そこに母とユズが帰って来る。手際よく水を汲み始める母。その手際のよさに、「さすがお母さん」と言って思わず感心して手を叩くみかん。そこにユズヒコが「なんでこんな時間に水汲みしてるの？」と言い出し…。
