“Voices of a Distant Star” is a short movie, combining action with dramatic romance. The story follows a middle school student who is drafted into a war against extraterrestrials deep in the solar system, only able to contact Earth through her cell phone.

Makoto Shinkai served as the director, writer, producer, animator, and a voice actor for the film. He also illustrated the associated light novel and wrote the manga. He would go on to serve as the director and writer of Your Name, which became one of the best selling anime films of all time after its release.
