Prisoners as young as 12 years old are among the inmates of an overcrowded prison in Herat in western Afghanistan. Media reports found boys accused of theft, adultery or not paying debts among adults who were jailed before and after the Taliban regained control of the country in August 2021. The Taliban had promised amnesty for those who worked for the country’s former government, but many have reportedly ended up in prisons or gone missing in the months since the departure of US-led forces.
