Kuuki-kei stories are not unique to Japan, but are certainly ubiquitous within anime. Seasonal watchers will be familiar with this type of show, the ‘girl joins some niche club’ genre. But I really adore them. They show that you don’t need big conflicts and crazy happenings to make a compelling story; sometimes the struggle of daily living can be just as interesting. I watch anime because of its uniqueness and variedness, the ability to weave a tale of epic proportions—and also the ability to capture something so fleeting as the joy that comes with catching your first fish. I hope you can get where I’m coming from.
