Requiem for the Phantom is an anime with a dark, maniacal tale that meekly covers thematic elements like the morality of following orders, the cost of change, and free will. However, most of those elements fail in this adaptation of Gen Urobuchi’s visual novel, lacking the dimension of his other works. Reiji, the main character, serves as a source of talking points though, and he embarks on a journey of self discovery, fighting his mental coding by Scythe, discovering the importance of survival and salvation; the defining traits he seeks to redo. Healing his love for Ein, or Eren, Cal, and then Mio, as well as his interactions with Claudia, we can see how these develop in him, and what Requiem for the Phantom did quite well…

Requiem for the Phantom isn’t a 2021 or new anime, coming from 2009, that follows the story of Reiji and Eren, or as they’re know by the criminal underworld and Inferno, Ein and Zwei. Their memories are erased by Scythe Master, and they serve as captive assassins to forward the goals of Inferno and it’s master, like Claudia. However, when they begin to discover their pasts and regain their memories, the master plan Scythe set the seeds for begins to unravel, and the pair slowly discovers their place in a dark world, and through others like Cal and Mio, how love plays into it…
