Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the relationship with China will “remain difficult” as he hit out at the outgoing government for “playing politics” with national security.

“The relationship with China will remain a difficult one,” Mr Albanese said during his first media conference as Prime Minister.

Mr Albanese also criticised the outgoing Morrison government for distributing text messages concerning an asylum seeker boat being intercepted on election day.

“I think we saw some politics played with national security issues on Saturday afternoon,” he said

“We should put Australia’s national interest first and not attempt to play politics with national security issues.”
