I know it’s three months late but finally, here’s my 100k subscriber special! It’s significantly shorter than the 32 minute video I originally planned, but I decided that it was a bit excessive (because first of all it’s a lot of work for me and second of all I’m sure no one is willing to sit around for a 32 minute premiere). I made some significant cuts to the content and ended up with around 10-11 minutes, and then decided to add one last thing on a whim.
I structured the medley in such a way that it tells a story: mind you, since each individual song in Revue Starlight tells a story in itself, I had huge internal conflict on whether I’m doing it right, or I was just mashing things together. My lackluster transitions are a clear showcase of that: it feels more like separate stories than a single full one. And so I decided… maybe I’ll just make it that way! (Totally not because I was unable to write better transitions).
The medley is a showcase of some of the stories that happen within Revue Starlight. I start off with an introduction to the ideas encompassed in these songs, by highlighting the themes of aspirations and longing. The lyrics say it all: “The fury that ignited pierced through the darkness, / Illuminating the girls’ longings.” Then I (poorly) transition into Hoshi no Dialogue, introducing the symbolism of the star to the existing themes: the music itself was recreated to match the ideas of the “star” as given in the original. Next I bring in some contrast by adding a mischievous touch: the witch that is Mahiru really shines in this particular section, and I really like this song overall so it got a longer section than the rest of the songs. After two very dissonant chords, I bring in Hoshiboshi no Kizuna. The original song is composed of two main parts: one of despair and pessimism (Nana), and one of hope and optimism (Karen). I specifically focused on the despair component because that was what I tried to highlight. I then bring in Butai Shoujo Kokoroe Makuai: the lyrics so full of hope and light and happiness that you almost forgot all the despair even existed. Of course that doesn’t last long, and Starlight comes on. Similar to Hoshiboshi no Kizuna, this song is composed of two parts, and again I focused on the despair, one even darker than what was seen before. This shows through the arrangement in the form of cluttered notes and hectic runs: nothing seems to work out for our poor Hikari here. I end the medley with the last section of Re: Create, finishing on that last spark of hope in an epic finale.

I really didn’t think I’d be writing this much outside of my English assignments but here we go again I guess. Not to mention I left so many details out already 🙂
… which brings me to my next topic, university. It does hurt me to say this, but I after my experience in my first term, I have a strong feeling that I will be significantly reducing Youtube activities (as low as they are already) in future study terms. I *will* try to get some Winter 2021 songs in (as it is a hype season) but I can’t promise anything after the start of the term on Jan 11.
It really is time I start considering my future a bit more, because my university courses are not going to get any easier (and I’m having enough trouble with them as they are).
